Description

This visit will take you behind the scenes of Lisbon’s opera house, to areas normally not open to the public. The theatre’s interior, in a late Baroque style, which is acknowledged as a perfect example of theatre architecture, underwent a number of adaptations over the years. The auditorium itself features a flamboyant aristocratic décor, with ornamental elements by Giovanni Appianni and a ceiling painted by Manuel da Costa and Cirilo Wolkmar Machado. Listed as a National Monument in 1928, the building’s extraordinary value and architectural beauty, and its annual programming, have made the São Carlos opera house an inescapable institution in Portuguese cultural life.
