Description

This building is a symbol – an icon – of the exposure and expansion Expo ’98 meant for the city of Lisbon. Immediately recognisable by its huge curving reinforced concrete roof, it consists of two separate areas: the Ceremonial Square, which is a generous sheltered outdoor space, and a two-storey building (plus a basement level) structured around an internal patio. Creating a visual association between earth and water, the pavilion’s monumental scale seems to play with traditional forms and the modern lines of modernity.
