Description

Commissioned by Brás de Albuquerque, the son of the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, and built between 1521 and 1523, the Casa dos Bicos stands out for its unusual façade covered in “diamond-like spikes”, known by the popular term “bicos” [Portuguese for spikes or beaks]; the façade takes its inspiration from Italian Renaissance models. The earthquake of 1755 did considerable damage to the building. Later, after partial reconstruction, it housed a salt cod trader’s warehouse, which remained there well into the 20th century. In 1983, on the occasion of the 17th European Exposition of Arts, Science and Culture, a renovation project by Daniel Santa-Rita restored the building’s original volume. However, it remained unfinished, a testament to the memory of what had since disappeared. Subjected to further renovation work from 2008 to 2012, Casa dos Bicos is now the headquarters of the Fundação José Saramago and home to the Casa dos Bicos archaeological nucleus.
