Description

Occupying a whole block, the Portuguese Mint building is made up of two programmatically distinct but interlinked bodies, housing the administration offices and the production spaces, without a loss of architectural consistency. Its construction was determined during the early phase of the Estado Novo regime, under Minister Duarte Pacheco, and it began operating in 1941. The building is a perfect example of the work of Jorge Segurado, where experimentations with the modernist lexicon were reflected down to the smallest details. What remains in the memory of the visitor are the rhythmic façades with sequences of pilasters, the exterior cladding in beautiful green azulejo tiles and the detailed main entrance. It was listed as a Monument of Public Interest in 2012.
